Chapter 61

(Above, the gardens at Hautefort)

Late that night they received a call from Detective Drolet. Apparently the missing Da Vinci had been found. It was in a case in the De Palma living room.

There was joy at Hautefort that night. Marcel had the chefs prepare a special meal for the next day. Drollet would arrive with the Da Vinci and the family would celebrate.

They called their closest friends to celebrate. Emile Picard was the only one who wouldn't be able to attend. His wife told them that Maitre Picard was in Lyon pleading an important case.

Constantin couldn't contain himself. "Tell Emile to call as soon as he returns. We have good news. The Da Vinci has been found."

"I shall tell him," she replied. "I'm sure he will be pleased.

But it would take days before Madame France Picard would see her husband again and when she discovered his involvement with these criminals, neither of them was pleased.

Picard's Jaw Drops

Bruce and Drollet entered his office without knocking. Picard rose and his jaw dropped.

He listened to the detective read the charges against him. He showed neither surprise nor emotion. He was taken from the building in handcuffs while his staff stood by silently and
watched.

As he was put into the car he turned to his ashen faced secretary.
"Call Maitre Beauduin," he said.

In Amboise, Karl Hellstrom went about his work. The Da Vinci house needed painting. He made a list of things to be done. Later, he returned to his huge estate. He spent a few minutes talking to his mechanic. They had received shipment of an old Rolls Royce. The discussion centered around reconstructing the rusted body.

Hellstrom Eats a Sumptuous Meal

He ate a complete sumptuous meal topped off with a fine Chablis and cheeses from various parts of France. Afterwards, when his staff was asleep, he sat in a huge tub and soaked in the soothing water. He smoked a long Cuban cigar and thought about Dr Biot. He wondered how he was doing. He actually liked the old man. Little did he know that Biot would soon be responsible for Hellstrom's undoing.

The Scandinavian man slept soundly. Little did he know that there certain people who knew that he, Hellstrom, was Swedish, not Finnish and little did he know that they were on his trail. What they would discover would become headline news.
