| (One of Gaudi's flights of fancy at the Parc Guell in Barcelona) Marie-Claude met him at the Suillac railroad station. She was all smiles. "So, how did it go?" "Very well. I met with Carlos. He's quite charming. I do have some people to see because of my visit. I'd like to get started right away, tomorrow." He steered away from mentioning Rina. They drove back to Hautefort and the conversation centered around Barcelona. As he talked, he noticed that Marie-Claude had tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "It must be hard for you to hear about Barcelona." "Yes, it reminds me of happy days, but my happiness died in Spain. It was all a terrible tragedy. Carlos was the only man I ever loved." "He talked very warmly of you. He said he was a fool." "Yes. He was and I'll never think of anything else." Marie-Claude Composes Herself After a few minutes, she composed herself and asked," Where would you like to go tomorrow?" "I'd like to see where da Vinci last lived and died. I'd like to go to Amboise." "Good. I'll go with you, if you like. It's a nice drive and there's so much to see on the Loire." It was dark when they returned to the chateau. Bruce slept very well. Marie-Claude tossed and turned. She remembered that last night in Barcelona when she and Carlos argued. She had returned unexpectedly from a lecture. He and 'that woman' were in bed. The woman smiled at her as if to mock her. She slowly dressed, put on her makeup, kissed Carlos on the cheek and walked out. She even had the nerve to wish Marie-Claude a good night. Carlos watched her pack without a word. The next morning she was gone. She Would Carry the Memory... But that scene remained. Marie-Claude would carry the memory of that last night with her wherever she went, for the rest of her life. Somewhere in another place, a dealer of rare art sat in a living room surrounded by pictures that nobody would see. In his hands was the small da Vinci drawing. He had obtained it at a steep price but to him it was worth it. Besides,
he and his group were still interested in profit and finding a buyer was the name
